Four ways to split a thread

Let the tool fit your text to 280 characters, or choose the breaks yourself.

Fit to 280 characters	Fills each post with whole sentences, up to X's limit. A paragraph that fits in one post stays together.
At blank lines	Each paragraph becomes a post. Best when you have already written the thread post by post.
At every new line	Each line becomes a post. Good for lists and step-by-step threads.
At a marker I type	Type --- (or your own marker) in the draft wherever a new post starts.

What makes a good thread

A thread lets you say more than one post allows, but only if people keep reading.

The first post decides

Most people only see the first post. Make it a promise: say what the thread is about and why it's worth reading, such as "Three years of selling furniture online taught us five things about pricing". Keep it short so it stands out in the timeline.

One idea per post

Each post should make sense on its own, because people often repost one from the middle. Blank lines in your draft make good breaks, which is why the tool keeps a paragraph together when it fits in one post. Five to ten posts is enough for most threads.

How do I make a thread on X?

Paste your draft into the thread maker and choose how to split it. Then post the first post on X, reply to it with the second, reply to that with the third, and so on. On the X app you can also press the + button while writing a post to add the next one.

How long should a thread be?

Five to ten posts suits most topics. Long enough to say something useful, short enough that people read to the end.

Should I number the posts in a thread?

Numbers like 1/6 tell people how long the thread is and where they are in it. They cost a few characters per post, and the tool counts them in each post's length. Choose No numbers if you prefer a cleaner look.

What happens if a post is too long?

It turns red and shows how many characters to cut. With Fit to 280 characters, no post is ever too long: the tool moves sentences to the next post instead.

How does the tool count characters?

The way X does: every link counts as 23 characters, an emoji counts as 2, and so does each Chinese, Japanese or Korean character.
