Why Instagram removes line breaks

Instagram tidies captions when they're posted, and blank lines can be tidied away with them.

What happens to your caption

When a caption is posted, Instagram can remove lines it thinks are empty. A line with only spaces on it counts as empty, and text pasted from notes apps often carries those spaces. Paragraphs you spaced out carefully then arrive as one dense block. A blank line with an invisible character on it isn't empty, so Instagram leaves it alone.

White space makes captions easier to read

On a phone, one or two sentences per paragraph are far easier to read than a wall of text, and a blank line before your call to action makes it stand out. How do I add line breaks to an Instagram caption?

Why do my line breaks disappear on Instagram?

Instagram can remove lines it thinks are empty when a caption is posted. Lines with only spaces on them, often from text pasted out of another app, are the usual cause.

Can people see the invisible characters?

No. The tool uses a standard Unicode character, U+2063, which shows as nothing. Your caption looks exactly as you typed it.

Do the invisible characters count towards the limit?

How much spacing should a caption have?
