Instagram grid layouts and photo sizes
Each post downloads at 1080 × 1350 pixels. A smaller photo still works, but its posts come out smaller.

How an Instagram grid works
A grid is ordinary posts that line up into one picture on your profile. The order you post them in is what makes it work.
Post from the bottom-right
Instagram puts your newest post top-left. So the first post you publish ends up bottom-right, and the last one top-left. The grid maker numbers the posts for you: post-01 is the bottom-right piece, so post them in number order. Post them one at a time, not as a carousel, because the profile only shows a carousel's first photo.
Cut for today's grid
Since January 2025, Instagram's profile grid shows each post as a 3:4 rectangle, cut from the centre of the post. The posts you download are 1080 × 1350 (4:5), the tallest shape Instagram lets scheduling tools publish. The grid trims a thin strip off each side, so the grid maker adds that strip from the next piece. Once posted, the pieces meet exactly.
Keep the grid lined up
Every layout is a multiple of three posts, so your older posts stay in their columns. Pinned posts sit at the start of your grid and push everything along, so unpin them or pin three. How do I split a photo into a grid for Instagram?
Drop your photo into the grid maker and pick a layout. Drag the box to frame the photo, then download the ZIP. It has one photo for each post, numbered in the order to post them.
What order do I post the pieces in?
In number order: post-01 first. Post-01 is the bottom-right piece, because Instagram puts each new post top-left and pushes the older ones along. The last post you publish is the top-left piece.
Which layout should I pick?
3 × 1 makes a banner of three posts across one row, and suits a wide photo. 3 × 2 (six posts) suits a square photo. 3 × 3 is the classic nine-post grid and suits a portrait photo. 3 × 4 (twelve posts) suits a tall one. The profile preview shows how each one looks before you download.
Why are the posts 4:5 and not square?
Instagram's profile grid shows each post as a 3:4 rectangle since January 2025, cut from the centre of the post. Square pieces would leave gaps or overlaps. The grid maker cuts 4:5 posts with the strip the grid trims off already added, so the pieces meet exactly.
Why do my pieces not line up?
Usually because of pinned posts, a post published between the pieces, or pieces posted out of order. Pinned posts sit at the start of the grid and push the pieces along, so unpin them or pin three.
What size are the downloads?
Each post is a JPEG of up to 1080 × 1350 pixels. If your photo is too small for that, the posts come out smaller, and nothing is stretched. The table above shows how big a photo each layout needs.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The grid maker works in your browser, so your photo stays on your computer. You don't need an account.
