The tags X reads for a card

X looks for its own twitter: tags first, then falls back to the Open Graph tags most sites already have.

TagWhat it setsIf it's missing, X uses
twitter:cardsummary_large_image for the wide card, summary for the small onesummary
twitter:titleThe card's titleog:title, then <title>

Why your link card looks wrong

Most broken cards come down to one of a few missing or mistaken tags.

No twitter:card means the small card

A page with only Open Graph tags gets X's small card: a square thumbnail beside the title. Add twitter:card with summary_large_image to get the wide picture that takes up the timeline.

The picture is too small or the wrong shape

X needs at least 300 × 157 for the wide card and crops it to 1.91:1, so a square or tall picture loses its top and bottom. Make it 1200 × 628, keep it under 5 MB, and give it a full https:// address.

X remembers the old card

X keeps a card for about a week after it first reads a page. If you fix your tags and X still shows the old card, add something to the end of the link, like ?v=2, so X reads it as a new page. Then schedule the post with Posttyy, which shows you the card before it goes out.

Questions, answered

What happened to X's own card validator?

X removed the preview from its card validator in 2022. Now the only way to see a card on X is to start writing a post. This tool reads your page the way X does and draws the card for you without posting anything.

Why does X show the small card instead of the large one?

Because the page has no twitter:card tag set to summary_large_image, or its picture is missing, won't load or is smaller than 300 × 157.

What size should a Twitter card image be?

1200 × 628 pixels for the wide card, which is the 1.91:1 shape X shows. At least 144 × 144 for the small card. JPG, PNG or WebP, under 5 MB.

I fixed my tags. Why does X still show the old card?

X keeps a card for about seven days. Add a query to the end of the link, like ?v=2, and X will read the page again.

Does this work for LinkedIn and Facebook too?

Mostly. They read the same Open Graph tags (og:title, og:description, og:image), so a page whose card looks right here will usually unfurl well there too.

Can it preview a page behind a login or on my own computer?

No. Like X, it can only read pages anyone on the internet can open. Pages on localhost or a private network are refused.

Is the card preview tool free?

Yes. It is free with no login. To keep it that way, each visitor can preview up to 40 links an hour.
