Where to add alt text on each network

Every network has an alt text field, but it's often tucked away. Here's where to find it.

  • InstagramBefore you share, open Advanced settings and choose Write alt text. On a posted photo, edit the post to change it.
  • X (Twitter)After adding a photo, tap +Alt on it (or Add description on the web).
  • LinkedInAfter adding a photo, choose Alt text on the image editor.
  • FacebookEdit the photo, then choose Alternative text and Override generated alt text.
  • WebsitesPut it in the image's alt attribute, or the Alt text box of your site builder.

What makes good alt text

Alt text is read aloud by screen readers in place of the picture. Good alt text gives the same information the picture does.

Say what matters, briefly

Describe what someone needs to understand the post, not every detail. Around 125 characters is a good length for social media, which is why the short version stays under it. Skip "image of": screen readers already say it's an image.

Include the words in the picture

If a photo has a price, a sign, a quote or a date in it, put those words in the alt text. Someone who can't see the picture can't read them either. The generator copies words that matter exactly.

Write it once for every network

What is alt text?

Alt text, short for alternative text, is a written description of a picture. Screen readers read it aloud to people who are blind or have low vision, and it shows in place of a picture that doesn't load. Search engines read it too.

How long should alt text be?

For social media, one sentence of around 125 characters is usually right. Some screen readers cut long alt text off, so start with the most important part. Use the detailed version for complex pictures like charts or infographics.

Is the alt text generator free?

Does alt text help SEO?

Yes. Search engines read alt text to understand what a picture shows, which helps it appear in image search. Write it for people first; a clear description is also what search engines want.

What happens to my photo?
