How to read your engagement rate

Engagement rate shows how many people did something with a post, as a share of your audience.

Followers or reach

By followers, the rate compares a post with your whole audience, including people who never saw it. It is the usual way to compare accounts. By reach, it counts only the people who saw the post, so it shows how good the post itself was. Rates by reach are higher, so compare like with like.

Bigger accounts have lower rates

A small account's followers are mostly people who chose it on purpose, so a bigger share of them react. As an account grows, its rate usually falls, even when its posts are just as good. Compare your rate with accounts of a similar size, and with your own earlier posts.

Post often, and at the right time

A steady run of posts keeps you in front of your followers. Plan them with the free Instagram feed planner, then schedule them with Posttyy's Instagram scheduler so each one goes out on time.

Questions, answered

How do I calculate engagement rate on Instagram?

Add up the post's likes, comments, saves and shares. Divide the total by your followers, or by the post's accounts reached, and multiply by 100. The calculator does this as you type.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

By followers, 1% to 3% is average, 3% to 6% is good, and above 6% is excellent. Smaller accounts tend to have higher rates, so compare yours with accounts of a similar size.

Where do I find saves, shares and reach?

Open the post in the Instagram app and tap View insights. You need a professional account, which is free: in Settings, choose Account type and tools, then Switch to professional account.

Should I count saves and shares?

If you have them, yes. A save or a share shows a post was worth keeping or passing on. Leave them empty to compare with calculators that count only likes and comments.

How do I work out the rate for my whole account?

Work out the rate for each of your last ten posts, then take the average. One post can be unusually high or low, and ten give a fairer picture.

Are my numbers sent anywhere?

No. The calculator works in your browser, so your numbers stay on your computer.

Is the engagement rate calculator free?

Yes. It is free, with no login and no limit.
