How formatting works on X

The X post box has no bold or italic buttons. This formatter gives you the same effect with ordinary characters.

Special characters, not formatting

Unicode, the list of every character computers can show, includes whole alphabets of bold, italic and monospace letters, made for maths. The formatter swaps each selected letter for its styled twin. The result is ordinary text, so it pastes into any app, including X. Lines and lists are ordinary characters too.

Style a few words, not the post

Screen readers, which read the screen aloud for people who can't see it, may spell styled letters out one by one, or skip them, and X search may not match them to plain words. Style a heading or a key word and keep the rest plain. For a whole line in a fancier style, such as script or bubble letters, use the X font generator.

Watch the count: styled letters cost two

X counts most letters as one character, but a styled letter is a rare character, and X counts it as two. The count under the box already reads it that way, so if it says 280 or fewer, X will post it. Style a few key words and a 280-character post still has room. To check a post with links and emoji, use the X character counter.

Questions, answered

Can you make text bold on X?

Not with a button in an ordinary post box. Select your words here, press Bold, and paste the result into your post. The bold letters are special characters, so they stay bold when the post is published.

How do I make a list on X?

Write one item per line, select the lines, and press Bullets or Numbers. The bullet points and numbers are ordinary characters, so they paste in as they are.

Do the styles work on every phone?

Nearly all. An older phone or computer may not have these characters, and shows a box instead. Most phones from the last few years show them all.

Why do numbers and accented letters stay plain?

Unicode has no bold or italic versions of accented letters or punctuation, so they stay as they are. The letters A to Z and the digits 0 to 9 are styled.

Why does my styled post count as more than 280?

X counts a styled letter as two characters, where a plain letter is one. Style only the words that need it, or shorten the post until the count shows 280 or fewer.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The formatter works in your browser, so your text stays on your computer until you paste it.
