Alt text

A short written description of an image that screen readers read aloud to people who can't see it.
Alt text stands in for a picture. Screen readers read it to people who are blind or have low vision, it shows when an image fails to load, and search engines use it to understand what the picture shows.
Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Threads and Pinterest all let you add alt text to a photo, though the field is often tucked behind an "advanced" or "edit" option. Good alt text says what matters in the picture in a sentence, skips "image of", and includes any words shown in the image, such as a price or a date.
Example
"A walnut dining table with an oiled finish in a sunlit workshop" rather than "table photo".
