Algorithm
The set of rules a social network uses to decide which posts each person sees, and in what order.
Every big network ranks posts rather than showing them in the order they were published. The algorithm looks at signals such as who posted it, how people have reacted so far, how long they watch or read, and what each viewer has engaged with before, then orders the feed to keep that viewer scrolling.
No network publishes its full algorithm, and each one weighs signals differently. Instagram and TikTok lean heavily on watch time and shares for video, LinkedIn on early comments, and X mixes accounts you follow with recommended posts. What they share is a preference for posts people actually stop for, which is why consistency and genuine engagement beat tricks.
Example
A Reel that most viewers watch twice gets shown to more non-followers, because the algorithm reads the replays as a sign people enjoy it.
