Hashtag
A word or phrase after a #, such as #woodworking, that groups posts on the same topic and makes them searchable.
Hashtags began on Twitter in 2007 and spread to almost every network. Tapping one shows other posts using it, and following one on Instagram or LinkedIn puts its posts in your feed.
They matter less than they used to, as networks lean on the algorithm and keyword search. Instagram now counts at most five per post. A few specific tags that say exactly what the post is about work better than a long list of popular ones.
